In a child's world, the sun often wears a big smile. Unfortunately, most of the ageing, cancer-causing effects of the sun are tied to the exposure a person receives before the age of 20.
That said, knowing the truth about the sun's rays shouldn't dim the joys of being outdoors. You can protect your baby's skin from the sun in three key ways:
- Use sunscreen regularly
Be generous with SPF 30, labelled broad spectrum and water-resistant (if available), or higher for babies over six months old. For younger infants it is recommended to apply sunscreen sparingly on the hands, face and feet if they're exposed, though covering these areas is the best approach to sun protection.
- Try to stay out of the sun
Especially between the peak hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- Cover up
Your baby's skin with UPF50-rated clothing, swimwear and hats.
